AI readiness is how prepared an organisation is to use AI productively and safely, across its leadership, people, data, technology and governance.
The five areas of AI readiness
Leadership
Leaders agree on why they are using AI, who owns it and how value will be measured.
People
Staff at every level know what AI can do in their job, and where to be careful.
Data
The data that matters can be found and trusted, and access to it is controlled.
Technology
Systems can connect to AI securely, and the cost is understood.
Governance
There are clear rules on acceptable use, privacy, review and risk.
Training people at each level
| Group | What they need |
|---|---|
| Board and CXOs | Strategy, risk, investment and the right questions to ask |
| Managers | Finding use cases, redesigning workflows, measuring results |
| All employees | Using AI tools well and safely in daily work |
| Technical teams | Building, deploying and monitoring AI systems |
What an AI Centre of Excellence does
An AI Centre of Excellence (CoE) is a central team that sets standards, chooses and helps deliver priority use cases, shares what works, and supports business units. It helps most when several teams are starting AI work at once and risk duplicating effort or taking on risks nobody is tracking.
A small organisation with one or two use cases may not need a formal CoE yet. A named owner and a shared set of rules may be enough.
Where to start
- Assess honestlyScore yourself on the five areas and find the weakest.
- Pick two or three use casesChoose ones with a clear owner and a measurable result.
- Train the people involvedStart with the leaders and teams who will use the system.
- Set the rulesAgree on what data may be used and who reviews the output.
- Measure and sharePublish what worked internally, then widen the effort.

Frequently asked questions
What does AI readiness mean?
It is how prepared an organisation is to use AI productively and safely, across its leadership, people, data, technology and governance.
How do you measure AI readiness?
Assess each of the five areas: is ownership clear, are people trained, can data be trusted, can systems connect securely, and are there rules on use and review? The weakest area is usually the place to start.

It helps most when several teams are starting AI work at once. A smaller organisation may only need a named owner and a shared set of rules at first.
Who in a company needs AI training?
Everyone, at a different depth: strategy and risk for leaders, use cases and workflows for managers, safe daily use for all employees, and building and deployment for technical teams.
